Police inquiry into handling of patient

PA Wellington An allegation related to the rough handling of a Lake Alice Hospital patient three years ago has been referred to the police for investigation after a departmental inquiry, said the Minister of Health, Mr Malcolm, yesterday. Mr Malcolm said that the district inspector, Mr Michael Behrens, was asked to conduct an inquiry into the conditions and practices at the hospital’s maximum security unit after allegations made on a radio programme in May of this year by a former patient of the unit. Mr Behrens’s report

was presented in two parts. “The reports completely exonerate the staff of the allegations relating to sexual misconduct, but the rough handling allegation requires further investigation and that is why it has been referred to the police," said Mr Malcolm. “There are a number of . general suggestions made by the district inspector about patient amenities and Erocedures and these are eing considered by the Health Department and will be discussed with the management of Lake Alice Hospital,” said Mr Malcolm.
