Inquiry rules for change
PA Auckland A bill changing the rules relating to commissions of inquiry will be introduced this year, said the Minister of Justice, Mr McLay, last evening.
“What we are doing is looking at the whole of the law relating to commissions of inquiry in light of recent experience,” he said. Such inquiries have been back in the limelight this week after the Privy Council decision on an appeal
that had its beginnings in the Mount Erebus Royal Commission.
A former High Court judge, Mr Peter Mahon, appealed against the Court of Appeal decision that he exceeded his jurisdiction. The Privy Council has dismissed that appeal. Mr McLay said he planned to introduce a bill for study during the Parliamentary recess. He declined to say what changes in the law he had in mind.
