Rangiora rivals sprint attractively

Gaffa and Donizetti, rivals for the feature race for three-year-olds at Rangiora on Monday, did their prospects no harm with their efforts in training at Riccarton yesterday.

Donizetti strode over a round on the plough then was taken on to sprint 1000 m in 62.6, the last 600 in 37.6. With Kevin Morton as his rider, he had a good weight up. Gaffa sprinted 1200 on the plough with his stablemate Just From Beechwood in 1:17.6, the last 600 in 39.

Marche Noir’s assignment was 1400 m on the plough. He finished in 1:32, the last 600 in 39.

Hint, the best-performed filly in the Rangiora feature race, ran her 1400 m on the

plough in 1:332, the last 600 in 37.8. Charles Beaufort, whose next start will probably be at the Banks Peninsula meeting, ran through 1600 m strongly in 1:43.8, the last 1400 in 1:29.8, the final 600 in 39.6.

Handsome Heir, the Bourne stable’s hopeful for the North Canterbury Cup, returned 1:31 for his 1400 and 38.6 for the last 600. Pamdora followed in 1:33.2, Macho Man and Lord of the Dance in 1:32.7, and Paddy Speed also in 1:32.7. Pamdora and Paddy Speed will run for the Garth Jackson stable in the North Canterbury Cup, Pamdora as the mount of the stable apprentice, Jackie Oakeshott. Ron McCann has been engaged for Paddy Speed.

The work on the grass was distinguished by Clansman’s 46.8 for 800.
