The Philippines
Sir,—Pat McCarthy asks what is the reality in the Philippines, given that two totally different pictures were presented the same day. The Philippines that Prudence Rothenberg saw is the reality for possibly 10 per cent of the population, and she acknowledges that many “live below the poverty line.” It is these latter, more than 75 per cent, whom the two priests are concerned about. The reason for this poverty? A few wealthy people are in power, heavily subsidised by the United States Government, and maintain such opulence at the expense of the vast majority who have inadequate food, housing, san-
itation, etc. The only way such an unjust situation continues is government by the gun. Since martial law was declared 10 years ago military troops have increased from 50,000 to 200,000. Those who protest about their poverty are inevitably tortured or silenced by the gun. The two priests’ protest highlights these injustices. — Yours, etc., W. J. KISSEL. September 29, 1983.
