Lloyd George cleared of sex scandal
NZPA London A former British Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, has just been cleared of a sex scandal, 87 years after it threatened his career. The sexual appetite of Lloyd George was said to have equalled his political genius, the “Mail on Sunday” newspaper reported. The scandal broke in 1896 when his wife’s cousin, Mrs Catherine Edwards, claimed that he was father of the illegitimate child she was expecting. Mrs Edwards also claimed that she and Lloyd
George had committed adultery on several previous occasions. Now, 87 years after the scandal, which Lloyd George survived, a book written by his nephew, William George, proves that he was wrongly blamed. The book reveals that the woman later retracted her statement, and lawyers and doctors were satisfied she had been lying. Mr George also names the man he believes did father the child, a Mr Gillet. The book “Lloyd George, Backbencher,” records that the baby died in infancy.
