General forecast: A cold front preceded by a strong north-westerly airstream is expected to spread north. North-wester-lies should be up to gale force in exposed inland parts of the northern South Island. Scattered showers in most places, but it should be mainly fine in the east. District forecasts: Canterbury: Moderate south-westerlies; mainly fine but for isolated showers; a change by tonight to fresh cold southerlies with some rain. Marlborough: Rain, northwesterlies, gale force in exposed places, moderating; becoming fine by afternoon apart from showers persisting in the western ranges. Nelson: Strong westerlies at first with rain; becoming

fine apart from showers in the western ranges. Buller: Strong north-wester-lies decreasing; rain and isolated thunderstorms; easing to occasional showers.
