Plans finalised for new bridge decking

Wellington reporter

Design work for the new concrete deck on the Selwyn River bridge south of Christchurch has been completed. However, the National Roads Board has decided that the programming of the relatively large sums involved had to wait its turn within State highway bridging priorities. Approval has now been given to enable replacement of the timber deck on the bridge with a permanent deck in reinforced concrete.

The board was told in 1981 that major repairs would be needed on the timber deck system, built in 1969. This was needed to widen the bridge from 5.5 metres between the concrete kerbs up to 7.32

metres between guardrails. During construction of the new deck, traffic will be diverted on to a causeway across the normally dry riverbed.
