$l00 account: $13,765 cheques

After opening an account with a deposit of $lOO, an unemployed man then negotiated 20 cheques to a total value of $13,765, said Detective Sergeant B. M. Roswell in the District Court yesterday. Trevor ; William Bradshaw, aged 25 (Mr E. Bedo), who . admitted the offences, told the police he had a drinking problem and that he had used the cheques to obtain money to support his habit. Judge Pain convicted and remanded him in custody to October 6 for a probation report and sentence.

Sergant Roswell said that Bradshaw had opened a cheque account with $lOO

and had made no further deposits. - No overdraft arrangements had been made and while issuing the cheques, between August 5 and September 2, the defendant had been aware there were insufficient funds to cover them. On charges of robbing the owner of a Sherborne Street dairy of $4O, unlawfully taking two vehicles, and driving while disqualified, Bradshaw elected trial by lie was remanded in custody to October 17 for the taking of depositions. Ross Thomson, aged 26, a wool presser (Mrs D. M. Orchard), who is also charged with the dairy robbery, was remanded to Sep-

tember 26. He also faces four charges of unlawfully taking vehicles, and one charge of driving while disqualified. He was remanded to the same date and did not plead. $4500 BAIL Bail was set at $4500 for a man charged with driving on the Main Road, Sumner, at a speed considered dangerous, and escaping from the custody of a constable. David Gregg Thomas, aged 27, a tool setter, is charged with having committed the offences on September 10. Bail was opposed by the police. PERIODIC DETENTION

A youth earlier convicted of defrauding his employer of $782 which he used to pay outstanding bills and put a deposit on a colour television set was sentenced to periodic detention for seven months.

Shane Ronald Davidson, aged 19, who admitted the offences, committed last month, was ordered to pay compensation in full. The Judge said Davidson appeared to have a ready propensity for dishonest conduct. The present offending was of a type deserving a salutary, deterrent sentence.

“If you appear again then a term of imprisonment is a very real prospect,” he said.
