‘Drunken bully’ jailed
PA Auckland A man described by an Auckland District Court judge as a "drunken bully and a coward” has been jailed for two years for assaulting his wife and ill-treating their baby. Judge Gilbert rejected Mrs Lorraine Smith’s submissions to keep Time Salanoa, aged 26, unemployed, of Grey Lynn, in the community with a sentence to help his alcohol and social problems. He said Salanoa had a
number of previous offences involving alcohol but had chosen to do nothing about it.
Salanoa earlier admitted ill-treating Siumoana Salanoa, aged three months, between September 1 and 3, and assaulting Faamahatu Salanoa on August 17.
The Court heard how Mrs Salanoa was beaten with a steel-framed baby walker, breaking her arm. Salanoa had slapped the baby’s face, causing cuts, bruising and lacerations, and then bound the child
hand-and-foot with ribbon and left him on a bed.
The next day, after he had been drinking, Salanoa attacked the baby again. He grabbed the baby by the legs and wrenched them apart. The baby was then thrown on to a bed.
“You are just a drunken bully and a coward and must be treated as such,” said the Judge.'
He sentenced Salanoa to six months jail for assaulting his wife and two years jail for ill-treating the baby, to be served concurrently.
