National park decision challenged
Greymouth reporter Proceedings were filed in the High Court at Greymouth yesterday seeking to overturn the Government’s decision to incorporate the South Okarito and Waikukupa State forests into the Westland National Park. The applicants in the proceedings are Federated Futures, the Westland Timber Workers’ Union, and the Westland County Council. The named respondents are the Governor-General, Sir David Beattie, the Minister for Lands and Forests, Mr Elworthy, the National Parks and Reserves Authority, and the West Coast National Parks and Reserves Board. The proceedings seek a declaration that the Order-in-Council made on June 21, 1982, incorporating the two forests into the park was invalid, contrary to law, and of no effect. Road toll 436 The Ministry of Transport said yesterday that 436 road deaths had been reported so far this year. This compared with 513 at the corresponding time last year. There had been 37 deaths so far this month, compared with 45 at the corresponding time in September last year—(PA).
