Animal tests

Sir,—Anyone viewing the recent television programme on vivisection would have been revolted at the atrocities inflicted upon terrified, defenceless, living creatures while those concerned attempted to justify their actions. The misery and suffering of their victims forcibly controlled while weedkillers, detergents and certain cosmetics are deposited into their stomachs can never be justified. These laboratory gods claim that man demands safety in whatever he uses or wishes to indulge in, one such claim being that researchers were “morally obliged” to investigate the effects of cigarette smoking. Drug-taking and alcohol tests are also carried out when all the evidence is already available. There is ample proof that animal testing can be unreliable and no guarantee of safety for humans. Are we being brainwashed by powerful multi-million dollar drug companies capitalising on man’s fears and indulgences when the real solution lies within himself?— Yours, etc.,

ESTELLE WIN. September 7, 1983.
