Scouts’ beginnings
Sir, — My late father, Mr H. S. J. Goodman was a pioneer, with Colonel Cosgrove, of the Boy Scout Movement. He started one of the first Boy Scout groups in New Zealand at the East Belt Methodist Church in 1908, and was the first District Commander for Christchurch. As a member of the first executive of the Boy Scouts’
Association, he helped draw up the constitution before the parent body in England had one. I have a photograph dated 1910 of a group of Boy Scouts watching two others boxing, against a backdrop of sandhills; and also a small album of photographs of a scout camp in January 1911. It shows tent inspection, saluting the flag, and ambulance work. I have been disappointed to notice my father’s name has not been mentioned of late as a pioneer of scouting, although in 1952 he was awarded an 0.8. E. for his services to scouting and hockey. — Yours, etc., AILSA E. DENSEM. September 2, 1983.
