Conservation Week

Sir, — The Forest Service can certainly be accused of stage management as reported in “The Press” on August 30. Protection of the magnificent scenery created by the forests on the west bank of the Manila Valley was supported by thousands of New Zealanders over two years ago in submissions on the draft North Westland Management Plan. Ever since, the Forest Service has said that the official summary of the submissions is not yet ready for release. Meanwhile, it has persuaded the Victoria State Forest Park Advisory Committee (chaired by the Forest Service) to zone these forests for logging. The Forest Service has admitted that it did not show the advisory committee the summary of public submissions. Nor

did it provide the committee with the D.S.I.R. and Wildlife Service reports which recommended preservation of the Maruia forests. — Yours, etc., MARK AUSTIN. August 31, 1983.
