Clansman, In the Glen sprint fast in training
, By J. J. BOYLE Clansman, In the Glen, and Donizetti were three of the more impressive trialists on the outside of the course proper at Riccarton yesterday. In the Glen wound up for the first leg of the Ashburton T.A.B. double tomorrow with a smart run to beat her stablemate, Hayrake, over 1400.
Clansman ran the fastest 800 of the training, and Donizetti beat Beach Bird and Cedar Key in style over 1000. Trialists had firm footW In the Glen gave Hayrake a start from the 1400, but ran up easily and won the gallop by two lengths in Imin 34.25, the last 800 in 52.2.
Clansman, which may resume on the second day of the Ashburton meeting, cru-
ised in from the 800 in 49.4. He improves with each gallop, and should have a rewarding four-year-old programme. Donizetti was under a snug hold clear of Beach Bird and Cedar key finishing 1000 m, the last 800 in 51.4. Next for Donizetti is the John Grigg Stakes next Tuesday. He will be ridden by David Walsh. Donizetti showed signs of field shyness in the Cashmere Plate at the Grand National meeting, and Walsh might adopt different tactics with him at Ashburton. Lord of the Dance and Macho Man, stablemates but rival candidates for the feature race at Ashburton tomorrow, were under good holds as they finished 1200 in Imin 275, the last 800 in
55.6, the final 600 in 42.4. Third Degree did well in his solo 1600, returning Imin 45.2 s for' the distance and 52.6 for the last 800. Upper Cut and Gay Repaire sprinted 800 in 53.3. Upper Cut’s stablemate, Hint, followed in 54, and Valentino returned 52 in finishing clear of Channel Bay and Pendulum. Tuesday, a form runner in the first Nottingham Park Maiden at Ashburtdn, sprinted her 800 keenly in 52.2.
Other gallops:— 800m.—Babooshka 56.8, The Kid 53.9, Just a Rebel and Gaffa 54.8, Durack and Mhorso 52.6, Sovereign’s Will and Pronto King 54, Bartsky 55.4, Lazy Swell 54.4, Pamdora 53.4, Chiasso 51.2. 600m.—Bev’s Girl 38.
