In the Glen should account for Ashburton rivals

By J. J. BOYLE In the Glen should be back in the groove at Ashburton tomorrow. Back on the provincial scene after a highly respectable sixth in the Winter Cup at her last start, in the Glen should be a formidable challenger in the Star Time Caterers Handicap, first leg of the Ashburton County Racing Club’s T.A.B. double. In the Glen finished her four-year-old racing last season on a high note — with three successive wins, and one of them was at Ashburton.

So far In the Glen’s Riccarton trainer, Garth Jackson, has concentrated on 1600 m races with the star of his Riccarton team, and none of - the others in tomorrow’s race could have a better strike rate at that distance.

A race-hardened Sporting Show would be an obvious threat to In the Glen in any race run on good footing, but Mr Gordon Thomson’s five-year-old will hardly find the metric mile easy in this, his first start since the autumn. Sporting Show shares top weight of 56.5, and is two kilos above In the Glen. Country Manners, a seven-year-old from Washdyke, struck a lean patch earlier in the winter, but has re-emerged as a prospect for tomorrow’s race after winning at Oamaru on August 22. How he will measure up against In the Glen is less certain. The last time they met, at Washdyke on July 23, Country Manners, in finishing third, was close to five lengths behind the Riccarton mare at the same distance.

Sir Ashley, Handsome Heir, and Lord of the Dance' are other form runners for Canterbury stables, all capable of giving maximum expression of their talents at 1600 m. Sporting Show’s younger brother, Every Show, should find the 1200 m of the Woodhams Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double, more within his compass as he also resumes after a spell tomorrow. Every Show toiled rewardingly on Canterbury courses last season, and his three-year-old campaign reached its high point when he slammed his rivals in the Great Easter at Riccarton. A run of something like that quality tomorrow will make him a formidable adversary for Canterbury’s best, which could be Strange Magic, Lord La Di Da, and Beach Bird.

Last-start second was behind Noble Note in sprint on second day of Grand National meeting. 4 2203 Lord La Di Da 9 52.5 Made fresh start with third behind Strange Magic and Turf Ruler at Washdyke early last month. Has the pace to be thereabouts all the way. R. Hewinson. 5 0880 Streetem 5 52.0 _ Won twice in late spring last year but was put aside in February after form tapered off. Might go well fresh but could be all the better for this one. B. grade meantime a bit rich. J. Donald. 8 0210 Bev’s Girl 3 49.5 Has shown much talent at times in the lower grades on soft and easy tracks. Won class three 1400 m at Riccarton last month but this is a lot harder. M.
