Horizontally opposed engines

Sir, — If the writers on the above subject are interested in motoring history, they should perhaps give credit to the pioneer of the opposed-piston flat four — namely, Dr Fred Lanchester, who designed and built his cars from 1894 to 1910: flat four engines, epicyclic gearbox, light steel chassis. By 1910 perhaps his original design was somewhat dated, for which he was roundly criticised. He replied: “They seem to change their mind frequently, but, of course, if I had their mind, I’d change it too.” — Yours, etc., R. E. BEARDSLEY. August 29, 1983.
