New stallion put down

PA Hastings Rahway, an English-bred stallion brought to New Zealand to stand at Paramount Stud, near Hastings, had to be destroyed in Wellington on Wednesday. The grey stallion apparently contracted an illness in transit from England. His condition deteriorated after his arrival in Wellington on August 10 and it was decided to have him put down. An autopsy, to determine the exact cause of the illness, was to be carried out. Rahway was a five-year-old son of the great sire Sovereign Path, out of Rhodie Blake. He was the winner of six races in England and the United States and over $lOO,OOO in stake money.

He was bred in England and then moved to the United States, where the Paramount Stud proprietor, Mr Norm Hawthorne, purchased him last year. Rahway went back to England for four or five months before being transported to New Zealand.

The horse was solely owned by the Paramount Stud and had over 40 mares booked to him this year.

A spokesman for Paramount Stud said yesterday that there is a chance a replacement may be found for Rahway for this breeding season but time is running out. It is almost certain that a replacement will be found before next year.
