White poll
An opinion poll indicates that most white South African voters back the Government’s controversial plan to give Indian and Coloured (mixed-race) citizens a political voice but that support for it has fallen slightly. The Sunday newspaper “Rapport,” questioned 2000 English and Afrikaans-speaking whites about the plan. The poll found that 61 per cent favoured the proposed new Constitution, which would still exclude South Africa’s black majority from politics. In April 65 per cent backed the plan. About 25 per cent of the whites opposed the plan compared with 21 per cent in April. But 91 per cent of those who vote for the governing National Party would support the reforms if a referendum were held now, the newspaper said. — Johannesburg.
