Minister’s move 'petty’

The Post-Primary Teachers’ Association is “appalled” at the withdrawal by the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, of the $lOOO government grant to the Teacher Trainees’ Association.

“This is a petty and heavy-handed response to an entirely legitimate action by teacher trainees,”

said the P.P.T.A.’s general secretary, Mr G. G. Gillespie. The trainees were upholding principles which had always been foundations of a democratic society: equality of opportunity and the right to peaceful protest, he said.

“Mr Wellington seems bent on turning the trainees

into martyrs and bringing the office of Minister of Education into disrepute. “Instead, he should be addressing the problems the trainees are highlighting in their campaign—in particular the danger that teaching will become the preserve of the well-to-do unless allowances are increased,” said Mr Gillespie.
