Addington market Prime stock in demand

All types of prime stock were in keen demand at the Addington market yesterday. A small yarding of beef cattle met with strong competition from export buyers and local butchers which contributed to another buoyant sale. Although the yarding of 1805 lambs was almost 800 more than last week, lamb values remained firm. The lighter works-type lambs had a good sale, with three export buyers operating. Values were:—

Prime sheep Hoggets had the best sale of the prime sheep section, with good hoggets up $2 a head and lighter, shorn hoggets increasing by about $l. Well-skinned heavy hoggets showed a bigger rise in value.

Old ewe prices remained firm. Outside buyers were active on both woolly hoggets and woolly old ewes. The yarding of prime sheep was 1742, compared with 1450 last week. Although the prime beef yarding was again small, it contained a big proportion of good quality cattle which were keenly sought after. Freezing companies bid strongly on all types of cattle including cows, and the market regained the ground lost last week when lighter cattle had

been slightly harder to sell. The top price was $B6O for an Angus steer sold on behalf of R. T. Masefield, of Akaroa. An Angus cow from S. L. and B. E. Chambers, Southbridge, made $5OO and heifers from Hillpark Partnership, Rakaia, sold to $502.

The yarding was 237, compared with 249 last week. Steers and heifers to 220 kg sold between 190 c and 200 c a kilogram; from 220 kg to 270 kg, between 195 and 210 c; and over 270 kg, to 220 c. Values were:—

Prime heavy steers, to $B6O. Prime medium steers, $416 to $498.

Prime light steers, $360 to $398.

Fat pigs With steady inquiry from the retail trade, values for fag pigs were slightly stronger than last week. Quality was again mixed, but pork prices were up by $3 to $4 a head and heavier pigs were $5 dearer. Choppers again had an excellent sale with good cutting pigs keenly sought after. Values were:—

Light pork, $B5 to $95. Medium to heavy pork, $lOO to $ll2. Light to medium bacon, $ll5 to $l3O.

Heavy bacon, to $142. Heavy choppers, $l6O to $lB5. Light choppers, $l3O to $l5O. Store pigs A small yarding of store pigs was of generally very good quality. The market was slightly easier than the previous week but buyers were still operating strongly at the end of the sale.

Buying interest was again widespread. Only a small number of breeding stock was offered and maiden sows sold at $350 and $355 and an in-pig fourth-litter sow made $ 365.

Values were:— Small weaners, to $42. Good weaners, $45 to $52. Slips and small stores, $55 to $65.
