Mr Gair to hear port case

Parliamentary reporter

The Ports Authority decision against Oamaru as a cement exporting port will be heard on appeal by the Minister of Transport, Mr Gair. on August 16. The hearing, which will be at the Beehive, may continue on August 17.

Mr Gair, who will sit alone as the Appeal Authority, is expected to reserve his decision for about a week.

Appealing the decision of the authority are the Oamaru Harbour Committee, and New Zealand Cement Holdings, Ltd, which says that shipping by rail to Timaru scotches its plan to build a works at Weston on Oamaru’s boundary.

The authority decided in favour of Timaru Port, which is 80km away but “under utilised and struggling financially.” The decision was made “in the national interest.”

A year ago, Mr Gair sat as Appeal Authority on a dispute between Nelson and Picton over the export of Westport cement. His ruling gave the cement to Nelson.
