Caparo will be on trial

Special correspondent Southland

Providing he comes through his Paparua Handicap mission satisfactorily on Saturday, Caparo will be on hand for the Winter Cup a week later at Riccarton. Those plans were announced yesterday by his Long Bush trainer, Kelly Thompson, who produced him to score a shock win in the George Adams Handicap at Riccarton last April. Peter McKay, who was associated with him in that

upset, rides him in the Paparua Handicap on Saturday. Caparo, Thompson said, had done well since being recommissioned two months ago. He was let down for six weeks in the late autumn.

It might not pay to overlook Caparo’s Winter Cup Sects. Now over his problems, he would bow to few, if any, South Island gallopers on his

day. Ronaele Maree and River Glow were given brief spells in the late autumn

and early winter and are forward enough again to race at the Grand National carnival for the stable. Willie Saxon is also on hand and a fresh start was made with Abdicator a few days ago. Thompson had been in the wars over the latter part of the 1982-83 season. He broke a wrist in April and dislocated a shoulder last month, but has recovered well. Carillion, Gallant Ace and other useful flat performers have yet to begin fresh campaigns.
