Australian interest shown in The Kid

By J. J. BOYLE Negotiations for the sale of The Kid to Australia were opened recently, but not continued and this promising three-year-old remains at Riccarton to race for Peter Jones’s stable. Like his stablemate Auk Princess, The Kid will be attempting to improve on a winning sequence of two in the Aylesbury Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, and he should go into the race at a high level of fitness. This was apparent at Riccarton yesterday when he sprinted fast on the outside of the course proper with his stablemate, Weinmeister.

Their 51s for 800 m was the fastest of the gallops that could be timed before fog enveloped the course. Chris Johnson has been

engaged to ride The Kid on Saturday. His Latest, a third runner for the Jones stable in the Aylesbury Handicap, will be ridden by the North Island jockey, David Walsh.

Peter Jones has also engaged Walsh to ride Damazam, one of the stable runners in the Amalgamated Packaging Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double on Saturday.

Damazam found 1400 m too short for him in the Brabazon Handicap last Saturday, but the 2000 m next time out will be more like his favourite trip. He finished his work yesterday by running 800 m easily in 54.85. Donizetti, whose weak run fresh up at Waimate mystified his trainer, John Bourne, gets his chance to

make amends for an expensive failure in the Aylesbury Handicap on Saturday. This attractive Bellissimo colt showed plenty of enthusiasm for his task yesterday in beating Gaffa by three lengths over 800 m in 53.45. Auk Princess and His Latest sprinted from the 1200 m in Imin 20.95, the last 800 m in 53.45. Kusadasi recorded 52.45, and his stablemate, Grey Sapphire, came up with 52.1 s in beating Daedalus by a wide margin. Channel Bay, a promising Pirgos filly in the Thistoll team, sprinted keenly under a light weight to return 52.8 s for her 800 m. In the Glen, one of the early fancies for the International Harvester Winter Cup, was restricted to 57.2 over 800 m.
