Letters to the Editor

(1) Letters submitted for printing in this column must not exceed 150 words. They should be written in ink or preferably typed on one side of the paper. Ample space must be left in the margins and between lines for sub-editing marks. (2) Letters written over pen-names or initials will not ordinarily be considered for publication. A legible signature and full postal address — not a P.O. Box number — are essential. (3) The correspondent must say whether the letter has been or is to be submitted elsewhere. The Editor does not undertake to acknowledge, hold, return or enter into correspondence on any letter not accepted for publication. (4) Address letters to the Editor, “The Press,” P.O. Box 1005 Christchurch. Hidden scene Sir,—As visitors to New Zealand, my wife and I have travelled extensively by motorised caravan, throughout the country. We have photographed beautiful scenes. The most beautiful was stolen. We had to trespass on a farmer’s land at the top of the terrace on the north bank of the Rakaia Gorge. The picture we have of the Rakaia Gorge, its river, and Mount Hutt in the background and farmlands below is the outstanding photograph of our whole trip. Turning a half turn and looking downstream reveals another picture of the rare, meandering braids of this wild river. Why do you hide this from tourists? Why do you hide this from your own people? When are you South Islanders going to wake up

to the opportunities that nature has bestowed on your magnificent island? — Yours, etc., HUGH D. JAMES. July 26, 1983.
