$6.5M to create 675 jobs
PA Wellington The $6.5 million allocated to the Lands and Survey Department in the Budget will provide about 675 extra jobs, says the Director-Gen-eral of Lands, Mr P. H. Lucas. Mr Lucas said they would be employed for farm maintenance, weed eradication, and the enhancement of amenities in national parks and reserves.
“Land development work will probably include clearing about 3000 hectares of scrub, additional grassing and fencing, and some deferred maintenance,” he said. “Farm parks will receive special attention with the provision of facilities for public access, including the construction of public viewing platforms at departmental deer farms.”
Mr Lucas said the increased use of national parks had put considerable strain on many of the more popular walking tracks. The extra allocation would allow the department to have new tracks cut and to maintain existing tracks.
