Support network formed
A network of north-west Christchurch women willing to give support to others in the event of intrusion or personal attack was set up after a public meeting held in Merivale yesterday. About 20 women, a third of those present, joined the “telephone support network” during the meeting, said an organiser, Ms Cynthia Spittal. Women in the network would be able to call on each other for help or support if their homes or properties were entered by intruders, or ♦if they were attacked, she said.
An “encouraging number” of women also signed up for Y.W.C.A. self-defence classed during last evening’s meeting. The gathering, which included a small number of men heard addresses by self-defence instructors and a police representative. A similar meeting will be held in the Sydenham Community Centre at 7.30 p.m. this evening.
