Job search officer resigns
Only a few weeks after the dismissal of a student job search co-ordinator in Christchurch, another co-or-dinator has handed in her resignation. However, Miss Deborah Chetwin, who gve two weeks notice last Friday, said yesterday that her resignation should not be seen as a protest against the dismissal of her colleague, Ms Jill Cotton. ■
Her resignation had been given partly because she was unhappy about working in an atmosphere which she said was “politically unstable,” and partly because she had been offered another job which she had accepted. First, there had been a strike and picket by clerical staff of the University of Canterbury Students’ Association when Ms Cotton was dismissed, then, at the national conference of coordinators in Wellington 10
days ago, there had been talk of striking in support of Ms Cotton, the most experienced co-ordinator in the country, said Miss Chetwin. The conference had also voted to not co-operate with Ms Cotton’s replacement, Ms Jill Shiel. Miss Chetwin said that she had started her job full of enthusiasm, but with all the fuss over Ms Cotton’s dismissal she had not been able to “work as a team” with Ms Shiel and the other co-ordinator, Ms Janet Borrette.
The student job search scheme had a lot to offer, she said. Miss Chetwin was employed by Lincoln College Students’ Association with a Labour Department wage reimbursement.
Ms Borrette is employed by the Christchurch Teachers’ College Students’ Association.
