Maoris needed to teach Maori: M.P.
PA Wellington Schools should hire Maoris on contract to teach Maori language to new entrants who have been through the language nursery (Kohanga Reo) programme, says the Eastern Maori Member of Parliament, Dr P. Tapsell. Dr Tapsell says he shares concerns voiced by the Educational Institute that no real preparation has been made for the influx of
Maori speaking infants. He said the Education Department’s present system of providing “pressure cooker marae courses” for non-Maori speaking teachers is useless and should be abandoned. As a preparation for teaching Maori, such courses are a “tragic mistake” though they were valuable in giving teachers an awareness of Maori customs, he said.
