'Right to work’ clause mooted
By KARREN BEANLAND The Government’s legislation on voluntary unionism might have to include a clause to guarantee the right to work. During his speech to the National Party conference, Mr McLay said that the Government could not' ignore threats from “militants” such as Mr Bill Andersen, who had already talked of forcing employers to agree to a closed shop. In order to protect the rights of people such as Mr Lawrence Sumner, the man who refused to pay the
strike levy at Whakatu, the Government might well have to go a step further. It might be necessary to include in the legislation on voluntary unionism a clause that would guarantee the right to work, whether or not the worker was a union member. The clause would be similar to clauses found in legislation in parts of the United States, said Mr McLay.
