Sharvid Skipper in fast mile

By JEFF SCOTT Sharvid Skipper, runnerup to Hilarious Guest in the Woolworths New Zealand Messenger Championship in December, took a career best of lmin 56.4 s when he won at Sportsmans Park in Chicago last week. The former fine New Zealand four-year-old, now just turned five, ran fourth in a heat and a consolation of the Inter-Dominion series at Auckland in March when only a C 7 pacer before being exported to North America by the Central Standardbred Agency. He is now the fastest son of his sire, the Most Happy Fella entire, Smooth Fella. The former Southland pacer, Moonshiner, raced by the agency’s co-directors, Charlie Hunter and Brian Meale, in partnership with his breeder, Mr Colin Baynes, of Gore, was sue-

cessful at the Meadowlands on Friday in lmin 57.45. At the Sacramento track in California, the former tight-class New Zealand pacer, Dictatorship, raced by the C.S.A. directors and the West Melton studmaster, Mr Jim Dalgety, won in 2min 0.65, and the same evening, Logan’s Byrd, a half-brother to Logan Lea and Logan Dryham, which won twice in New Zealand last season for Tom and Barry Clark of Greenpark, also won in lmin 595. Purchases last week by the Central Standardbred Agency included the Canterbury pacers, Ulster Prince, which won twice from lan Cameron’s Rangiora team last season, and Avon Row, which cleared maiden class in impressive style at Addington in March for the Christchurch owner-trainer, Gayin Thompson.
