Deep trawler to dry dock
The Otago Galliard, a 1660ton deep-sea trawler, is scheduled to atrive at Lyttelton today to use the dry dock. She is expected to stay in the dock for routine maintenance work for about a week. The Otago Galliard is owned by Fletcher Fishing, Ltd, and is based at Dunedin. She and her sister trawler Otago Buccaneer, arrived in Dunedin more than a year ago after Fletcher Fishing bought them at bargain prices from the British fishing company, Boyd Lines. The vessels were previously called the Arctic Galliard and the Arctic Buccaneer. After their arrival the vessels were converted for New Zealand waters. Facilities were provided for limited packing aboard for species such as mackerel which do not need subsequent packaging. The main work on board is the heading and gutting of the catch. Both vessels began service in 1975 as “go anywhere, catch anything ships.” They can each freeze 60 tonnes of fish a day. The two vessels had to be sold as a result of the slump which has hit British fishermen. Some of the once-great British ports are in decline because of Continental and East European competition in traditional waters, allowed under E.E.C. regulations.
