Doctors and TM
Sir,—We represent 30 New Zealand doctors who have learnt transcendental meditation (TM). We practise TM daily and we recommend it to our patients. Two of our members have visited the international TM headquarters in Switzerland. Our impression of TM and its teaching organisation is profoundly different from that portrayed in a recent article in your newspaper. We find TM an admirable technique. We have examined over 150 published studies documenting measurable benefits from practising TM. We feel the aims of the teaching organisation — to relieve mankind of suffering — are attainable and most laudable. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, its founder, we have found to be a man of utmost integrity, sincerity, and simplicity. We have seen TM bring peace of mind and better health to hundreds of New Zealanders. We see TM creating a better world. No other technique holds such promise for mankind. The press must report it accurately. — Yours, etc., DAVID LOVELL-SMITH, WENDY LOW, GEOFF NICHOL, LES DING, HUGH LOVELL-SMITH, 3HELAGH MATHIAS. Executive Committee, Age of Enlightenment Medical Council. July 30, 1983.
