Call for a kiwi house

The New Zealand Tour Drivers’ Guild wants Christchurch local authorities to open a kiwi house in the city. The Riccarton Borough Council’s community and development committee yesterday discussed a letter from the South Island secretary of the guild, Mr C. R. Gilmour, who said that many overseas visitors to the South Island were disappointed that they could not

get to see live kiwis. Many children in the city did not have the opportunity to see live kiwis. Mr Gilmour said that the guild’s recent conference felt a kiwi house should be opened close to the city so that it was within walking distance for visitors and handy for coach groups. Sites such as Orana Park and Willowbank were too far away. The conference favoured

sites such as the Botanic Gardens or the Canterbury Museum.

The Mayor of Riccarton, Mr R. W. J. Harrington, said that he thought the idea was a very good one. He said that a site such as Riccarton House could be considered.

The committee supported the idea in principle and referred it to the Canterbury Promotion Council.
