Union seeks exemption
PA Wellington The Early Childhood Workers’ Union is still trying for exemption from the wage freeze so it can negotiate an award for child-care workers. After a week-end conference, the union said it was
concerned at the conditions under, which child-care workers were working. “They receive no legal coverage to give minimum standards in terms of sick' leave, length of working hours, rates of pay, lunch breaks, or procedures for
disputes,” said the union president, Ms Helen Cook. Child-care workers are not covered by an award because the union was registered in March last year, and an award was unable to be negotiated before the freeze. ’
