Police ‘strangers to public’

PA Wellington Policemen were in danger of becoming servants of their administrators and the government of the day instead of the community they served, said the Police Association’s secretary, Dr R. A. Moodie, yesterday. Dr Moodie told a police supervisors’ seminar that the distancing of the police from the public meant a need for a greater emphasis to be placed on community policing. He said the public were clamouring for more interaction with the police. “They want someone who they can relate to.” “The public is being policed at the moment, in their minds, by blue-uni-formed strangers,” he said.
