South China Sea next conflict area?

NZPA-Reuter Honolulu The Commander in Chief of the United States Pacific Fleet has warned of potential conflict in the South China Sea. Admiral Sylvester Foley said the potential for confrontation in the area is “as great or greater than in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. “Sooner or later there is bound to be a confrontation. It depends on how it begins and who the players are,” he said. However, President Reagan’s November visit to the region “will go a long way toward maintaining stability.” Admiral Foley said countries in and around the South China Sea are “as stable and calm as they’ve been in years,” but sooner or later there might be a misunderstanding among smaller, economicallytroubled countries.
