Taranaki task force rejected by Ministers

PA New Plymouth A Waitangi tribunal recommendation for a special task force to study mediumterm planning for development in Taranaki has been rejected by the Government. In a joint statement the Minister for Energy, Mr Birch, and the Minister for Works and Development, Mr Friedlander, said the task force was not necessary. Te Atiawa Maoris supported them, they said. The Government has decided that regional organisations could do the work instead of the special task force. Concern at the lack of regional planning to deal with industry and issues such as waste disposal had come from, the Planning Tribunal. The Waitangi tribunal had also drawn attention to them when it studied problems associated with the Waitara outfall. The Ministers said they were impressed by the concerted activity initiated by bodies such as the Taranaki United Council and the Taranaki Catchment Corn-, mission since the problems were revealed.
