S.A. gold interest

PA Wellington Representatives of the South African-based AngloAmerican conglomerate, which is involved in mineral exploration on the West Coast through its Gold Mines of New Zealand, Ltd, subsidiary, have been investigating further opportunities within New Zealand.

A group which included an Anglo-American solicitor

from Johannesburg, Mr D. Titlestad, and two executives said to be connected with the mining side of the conglomerate’s activities, Messrs N. Keyes and A. B. McKerron, this week called on the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch, and the president of Federated Farmers, Mr Rob Storey.

They were accompanied by Anglo-American’s Australian manager, Mr Bob Appleyard, and the director of Brierley Investments, Mr John Lawrey, who is also a director of Gold Mines, in which Anglo-American has a 94 per cent holding.

On Thursday, the group visited the West Coast,

where Gold Mines has carried out extensive alluvial gold prospecting in the Inangahua area. Mr Lawrey said yesterday that Gold Mines had an 80 per cent stake in a joint venture with Cue Minerals, Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cue Energy Resources NL. Through Cue Minerals there was “a substantial New Zealand involvement” in the work being carried out by Gold Mines. “The West Coast is on the top of our activity list and our work has been done in a way which involves coming to agreement with farming groups on compensation and land restoration,” he said.
