Unlighted cycles

Sir,—As a cyclist and motorist I express my concern regarding the irresponsible attitudes displayed by some city cyclists. In particular, I refer to the increasing number of cyclists who fail to meet minimum safety standards in relation to adequate lighting. These people fail to appreciate that in the event of an accident between a motor vehicle and a cyclist, the latter will inevitably sustain serious injuries. As a practising nurse I see the tragic results of such irresponsible attitudes. If some cyclists are incapable of ensuring their own safety then Ministry of Transport officers should take the initiative to enforce the lighting regulations in order to protect these people from the consequences of their own folly. — Yours, etc., A. R. NEESON. July 14, 1983.
