Maffey in snooker final
Stan Maffey has achieved the unusual distinction of reaching the final of the Canterbury snooker championship at his first attempt for the title. In the final, Maffey will meet Peter de Groot, who will be contesting his first Canterbury final after' several attempts.
In the semi-finals last evening, Maffey came from three frames to one down to beat Ken Giles 4-3. It was a very tthht contest, with neither [Sayer leaving many open-
ings. De Groot, who was the runner-up in the South Island tournament a few years ago, confirmed his recent good form by beating the former New Zealand representative, Lew Adams, 4-2.
This, too, was a long, tight game, with de Groot winning on the black in the sixth frame. Scores:
