French envoy’s fiancee freed
NZPA Peking Li Shuang, the Chinese fiancee of a French diplomat, who was released from a re-education camp last week;- said yesterday that she hoped to marry as soon as possible. Miss Li, a 26-year-old ar-
tist, hastened to add that she wanted her marriage to Emmanuel Bellefroid, aged 35 — a former diplomat in the French Embassy in Peking who is now in Paris — to be in total conformity with China’s law. Mr Bellefroid has also
said that he wants to marry Miss Li as soon as possible. Miss Li was arrested in September, 1981, as she was entering the compound where her fiance lived. She was sentenced by the police without trial to two years of “reform through labour” for
immoral conduct, notably for having lived with Mr Bellefroid. Paler and thinner, but looking healthy, Miss Li said that she was “overjoyed” at being released, having had her sentence shortened by two months.
