I.Y.D.P. Trust to end
The International Year of Disabled Persons' Telethon Trust will be wound up in February, 1984, after allocating about $7 million. The chairman of the trust, Mr M. J. O’Brien, Q.C., said that it had been planned to distribute all of the money given to the Telethon in 1981 by December, 1983. This had almost been achieved. The biggest grant made in the latest distribution was a further $150,000 to the New Zealand Paraplegic and Physically Disabled Foundation. The money will be used to make low-cost loans available to disabled persons for home loans, setting up businesses, and buying vehicles. Grants of $BO,OOO to the Christchurch Co-ordinating Council for the Disabled, and $36,500 to the Wellington Disabled Resources Trust, will assist in the merger of several groups in the two cities so that they can work more efficiently. Other grants were: Capricorn Film Trust, $6500; New Zealand Schizophrenia Fellowship, $25,000; SPELD, $10,000; Waikato Co-ordinating Council for the Disabled, $1500; Anchorage Christian Rehabilitation Centre, $15,000. Technical Aids Trust, $30,000; Combined New Zealand Societies for the Deaf, $7392; Crippled Children Society (Christchurch), $20,000; Ryder-Cheshire Foundation (Manawatu), $40,000; Counterstroke New Zealand, $15,000. University of Canterbury, $15,000; Crippled Children Society (Auckland) $1100; University of Otago, $23,000; Laura Fergusson Trust for Disabled Persons (Christchurch), $12,000; West Coast sub-branch of Canterbury Asthma Society, $lOOO. Taranaki Asthma Society, $1000; North Otago Asthma Society, $500; -Hawke’s Bay Asthma Society, $500; New Zealand Schools for Physically Disabled Children, $5000; Northland Multiple Sclerosis Society, $3OOO. Multiple Sclerosis Society of New Zealand, $6500; Bay of Plenty Multiple Sclerosis Society, $2000; Southland Multiple Sclerosis Society, $500; South Canterbury Multiple Sclerosis Society, $500; Manawatu Multiple Sclerosis Society, $lOOO. Waikato Multiple Sclerosis Society, $4000; North Shore Multiple Sclerosis Society, $500; Auckland Multiple Sclerosis Society $1000; Wellington Multiple Sclerosis, $1000; Crippled Children Society (Waikato), $2000; Department of Psychological Medicine, Christchurch Hospital, $6400.
