Mare’s first ‘ride’
A three-year-old mare from Geraldine had the “race” of her life yesterday when the horse float in which she was travelling became separated from the car towing it on the railway bend at the Selwyn River corner, on State highway 1.
The trainer and car driver, Mr Arthur O’Brien
(pictured with the float and the horse, Snow Question) said that it was the first time in 20 years that he had lost the connection with a horse float. Fortunately Snow Question, which has just been broken in, was unharmed. “She must have ridden it like a surfboard,” said Mr
O’Brien. The horse stayed in the float as the float steered along the steel barrier around the broad curve in the road. With the help of other motorists, the float was lifted back and connected to the towbar, and Mr O’Brien and Snow Question continued south to Geraldine.
