Unemployment and appearance
Sir,—Both Nicola Taylor and G. L. Cutler misinterpret my letter regarding unemployment. First, I did not accuse “all unemployed people of being unemployable.” I said that “there are many unemployed who want to keep it that way” and I stand by that statement. Second, were I to advertise the position in “The Press,” I would draw applicants already employed. The Labour Department caters largely for the unemployed, and I show my concern for the problem by drawing applicants from the records of the unemployed. Perhaps Nicola Taylor would tell us if she thinks the punk rockers (who sparked this discussion in the Reporter’s Diary) are trying at all to make themselves employable. 1 think not. — Yours, etc., LINDSAY SMITH. July 8, 1983.
