Bull sale prices up
The improvement shown in the beef market during the last month was reflected in prices at the annual Culverden bull sale.
Twenty-nine Hereford bulls sold for an average price of $1717, almost $4OO higher than last year’s average, and 16 Angus bulls averaged $1225, compared with $ll3B last year. The top price was $3400 which was gained three times by Herefords and five bulls made $3OOO or more. Last year the top price was $3300. Most of the buying power was provided by North Canterbury farmers, although several bulls went to South Canterbury and the West Coast. G.L.C. and E. A. Dunster had a highly successful sale with their first three Hereford bulls selling at $3400 (twice) and $3OOO. These vendors sold seven bulls at an average price of $2600 and a bottom price of $l6OO.
The next best Hereford average was $1950 gained by R. J. and M. A. Burrows who
sold six bulls, including two at $3400 and $3300, and a bottom price of $BOO.
Mrs G. M. Burrows averaged $l4ll for nine Herefords, ranging from $2200 and $lOOO, and C. D. B. Douglas sold three from $9OO to $lBOO. J. R. and A. J. Davison sold four Herefords between $BOO and $lOOO. The top Angus price was $2OOO, paid for a bull from G. and W. Chisnail, who also topped the Angus averages with $1414. Six other bulls from these vendors sold from $l7OO to $9OO.
B. J. Johns sold four Angus bulls between $lBOO and $9OO for an average of $l2OO, and P. J. Gardner gained prices ranging from $l2OO to $9OO for three bulls. G. G. Gardner sold two bulls at $9OO.
The dispersal of the Clifton Polled Hereford Stud on behalf of A. F. G. Blakely came after the bull sale. Prices for 28 registered females of varying ages ranged from $3OO to $l5OO, nine cows selling for $6OO or more.
