Graham allowed to play tomorrow

From JOHN COFFEY in Brisbane There is no animosity in the New Zealand rugby league camp that the usual Kiwi captain, Mark Graham, will be playing for his North Sydney club tomorrow. Graham withdrew from this evening’s test against Australia because of the knee injury he suffered in the first international at Auckland a month ago. Under the present international regulations, New Zealand could have demanded that Graham not play in the week after a test for which he Was not available. The rule was introduced to prevent overseas clubs refusing to release players for test duties.

However, the Kiwi coach, Mr Graham Lowe, and the New Zealand Rugby League president, Mr Ron McGregor, said yesterday that no such action would be taken.

Graham has given exceptional service to the Kiwis since his transfer to Australia in 1980 and was genuinely disappointed to withdraw from tonight’s match.

Both Graham and Mr Lowe were of the opinion that the Kiwis could not afford to risk an aggravation of Graham’s injury early in the test. The Kiwi match-plan was disrupted in the first test when the fullback, Gary Kemble, was a casualty after only six minutes.
