Settlement reached
NZPA-Reuter Los Angeles
Lawyers have reached what one described as a substantial financial settlement in a dispute over the film, “Smokey and the Bandit,” starring Burt Reynolds. A Los Angeles Superior Court jury found last month that the producers took the idea for the film from a screenwriter. Michael Montgomery, without paying him for it. The settlement was reached only hours before the case was’ expected to be turned over to a jury to decide on damages. During the 11-week hearing Mr Montgomery’s lawyer, Mr Rick Flam, had said he would ask for damages in excess of SUSI million (SNZI.S6 million).
The film has earned more than SNZ94 million since it was released in 1977. Mr Montgomery claimed the idea for the film came from a screenplay, “C.B. and the Cyclone,” which he wrote.
