Change at C.J.C.

As from July, 1984, the Canterbury Jockey Club will be controlled by a committee of 16. Support for a proposal that the committee and stewards of the club be merged into one body was given by members at the club’s annual meeting on Wednesday. “The continuing separation of the committee and stewards is an anachronism and should be abolished,” said Mr B. Kinley in proposing the alteration to the rules for the proposed change. In general business, Mr John Waterworth appealed to the club for more entrepreneurial skills in popularising its minor race meetings to give them some of the widespread appeal of its Easter Monday promotion. Mr Waterworth criticised the club over the state of the chute on the racecourse property used for exercising horses. “I dare anyone to ride a bike along that chute without falling off,” Mr Waterworth said. “It has holes three feet deep.” Mr J. D. Gregan, a member of the committee, said there had been a recurring problem with the maintenance of the chute, especially because of difficulties in securing cinders.
