Chains needed —A.A.
Chains are essential on Arthur’s Pass and the Lewis Pass, the Automobile Association (Canterbury) reported last evening. It was snowing steadily on both passes last evening, after a day of intermittent snowfall. Ice was also a danger, said a spokesman. Chains were essential
from Porter’s Pass through to Otira, and motorists should take extra care at Paddys Bend, between Cass and Bealey, where a big slip had closed the road from 2 p.m. on Monday to 9 a.m. yesterday. Although the road was open, there was still a problem with falling debris.
