Teacher grading
Sir,—The current debate on the training, qualifications and grading of teachers should take into account the farcical situation whereby secondary school teachers, once appointed on the basis of their qualifications in a particular subject, are regularly required to "teach” subjects in which they have no training and about which they know virtually nothing. Surely pupils should be taught by a person with a degree or equivalent in the subject, not by a “teacher” who is only just managing to keep one chapter ahead of the class? — Yours, etc., Dr M. VINEY.
